Manohar Shyam Joshi (1933-2006), was a renowned writer of Hindi Literature, who revolutionised India's television industry with the immensely popular soaps Buniyaad and Hum Log ( often called the Father of Indian Soap Operas).
Born on August 9,1933, in Uttarakhand's Almora district, he defined the world of television in 1982 with Hum Log, India's first television soap opera. The serial, which dealt the everyday lives of people, also marked thespian Ashok Kumar's television debut.His next soap opera, Buniyaad, highlighted the trauma of Partition though the life of a family who were forced to cross over from Pakistan to India in 1947.
Manohar Shyam Joshi is also known for his novels which have dealt with varied topics ranging from Kasap(Kumaoni Traditions) to Political Satire like Netaji Kahin. He was one of the first post modernist authors in modern Hindi literature , as evidenced in his novel Kuru kuru Swaahaa and his novella Hariya Hercules ki Hairaani. He was awarded the prestigious Sahitya Academy award for Hindi, for his novel Kyaap, in 2005. As a journalist, both in the broadcast and the print media. he served as the editor of Saptahik Hindustan and Weekend Review . His journalistic writings covered a wide range of topics from popular science to political intrigues . He also wrote an opinion column for Outlook India .
